Cogdill rose to fame when he covered the story of Susan Smith (a Union, South Carolina, woman convicted of killing her young sons). He initially claimed that an African-American man kidnapped and carjacked Smith. Cogdill’s Susan Smith : A Question of Justice (1996) won an Emmy. This earned him appearances on NBC’s Today Show and MSNBC.
Cogdill started his television career two weeks after he graduated from college. He worked at WECT, a NBC affiliate in Wilmington. Cogdill soon moved to WWAY, Wilmington’s ABC station. He later moved to WRDW-TV, Augusta, Georgia, which is CBS-aligned. In 1989, he finally landed at WYFF, a South Carolina station (an NBC affiliate), where he established his status as the most decorated anchorman in South Carolina television history.

Michael Cogdill was born George Michael Cogdill on June 11, 1961. He is an American journalist, anchor, novelist, screenwriter and film producer. His journalistic work has been featured on NBC’s Today Show and CNBC, MSNBC, CNN, and MSNBC. He has received 29 Emmys as well as a National Edward R. Murrow Award.
Cogdill was the son of a truck driver, and a mill worker, in Asheville. He started his career as a lawnmower, horsestall cleaner, and a film set assistant. In 1979, he graduated from North Buncombe High School, Weaverville, North Carolina. He then received a cum laude degree from the University of North Carolina at Asheville (in 1984), with a BA in communications, with an emphasis on the liberal and arts.
It was announced in 2014 that filmmaker Richard O’Sullivan had adapted She- Rain as a screenplay and that plans to produce the property as a feature film were in development (with Cogdill’s film and television production company HeartStrong Media serving as a producing partner).
