Michael Chiang is one of the most popular and richest Playwright who was born on October 27, 1955 in Muar, Johor, Malaysia. Michael Chiang, born 27 October 1955 in Muar (Malaysia) is a prolific screenwriter and playwright in Singapore. He is known as Singapore’s most successful and famous playwright.

Dick Lee, a singer and songwriter approached Chiang in 1988 to create a musical about Singapore. Chiang created Beauty World with Lee’s title song and opening number. It was toured worldwide. It has been restaged many times, including an adaptation made for television in 1998. Lee will direct the musical and it will be restaged at the Victoria Theatre in November 2015.

He graduated from the National University of Singapore with majors in English Literature, Chinese Studies and Philosophy. In 1992, Chiang became a Singapore citizen.

In July 2013, Chiang returned to the stage with his first production in 14 years, High Class, which was staged at the Drama Centre Theatre, followed by a rerun of Army Daze. Chiang also wrote the screenplay for Our Sister Mambo which was released in July 2015 to celebrate Cathay Organisation’s 80th anniversary.

Chiang followed up this with Love & Belachan (1985), starring Lim Kay Tong, Jacintha Aisheganaden and a book called Army Daze about life in National Service. TheatreWorks was so impressed by the book that they decided to stage it on the stage in 1987. Nine years later, Army Daze became a movie.

Born in Muar in Malaysia to a housewife and a teacher, Chiang moved to Singapore when he was 11. He attended the Anglo-Chinese school and was then placed under the care of his elder brother, Dr Chiang Hai Ding. He is the youngest brother of seven siblings and has an adopted younger sister. He was a frequent visitor to the cinema as a child and developed an appreciation for Hong Kong classics from the 1960s.

Chiang’s first foray into playwriting was in 1984 when he was an entertainment journalist for The Sunday Times. Because he had written humor columns for The Sunday Times, he was asked to submit a lighthearted play for the Singapore Arts Festival’s Bumboat production. Beauty Box, a play about beauty queens in shopping malls, was not only criticized but also popular with the public.

From 1990 to 2009, Chiang was the editorial director of Mediacorp Publishing, which publishes 8 Days. The playwright of Army Daze (1987) and Beauty World (1988), Chiang had his plays were collected in and published as Private Parts and Other Playthings in 1994 by Landmark Books and Play Things in 2014.
