Since 2000, under Mayor Coleman, the city of Columbus has spent $54 million less than budgeted. At the same time, he helped boost the city’s spending on police and fire services from 63 percent of the city operating budget to 71 percent in 2005. Under Coleman, the city has also cut more than $190 million from continuation budgeting levels since 2000, despite increases in costs for medical insurance, wages and workers compensation. As of 2013, bonds issued by the city of Columbus received a AAA bond rating from all three major rating services, the highest possible rating.
Coleman worked as an attorney at the Columbus law firm Schottenstein, Zox & Dunn Co. LPA from 1984 to 1999, and eventually became a partner.

Michael B. Coleman, born November 18, 1954, is an American politician and member of the Democratic Party. He was the 52nd Mayor of Columbus in Ohio. He was the first African American to be elected mayor of Ohio’s capital.
Coleman married Frankie in 1984. It was their second marriage. Three children were born to the Colemans: Kimberly, Justin and John-David. Justin is an officer with Columbus Division of Police. John-David was a sergeant in United States Marine Corps. Mayor Coleman and Mrs. Coleman made public their intention to get a divorce in October 2009. The Colemans applied for a dissolution in the early part of 2011, which was granted.
Coleman was selected as the 1998 Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor of Ohio, on the same ballot as Lee Fisher. Fisher and Coleman lost a heavily contested race to Bob Taft and Maureen O’Connor.
