He is the only child of Richard, Lord Attenborough (1923-1914), and Sheila, Lady Attenborough (1922-16). He is also the nephew and brother of Sir David Attenborough, John Attenborough, as well as Charlotte Attenborough.

Between 2002 and 2013, he was the Artistic Director at Almeida Theatre, London. He was previously Associate Director at the Mercury Theatre Colchester 1972-1974, the Leeds Playhouse (now West Yorkshire Playhouse), 1974-1979, and the Young Vic 1979-1980. He then became Artistic Director at the Palace Theatre, Watford 1980-1984, and Artistic Director at Hampstead Theatre from 1984-1989.

In 2012 Attenborough was presented with the Award for Excellence in International Theatre by The International Theatre Institute

He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2013 Birthday Honours for services to theatre. He is the recipient of Honorary Doctorates from the Universities of Leicester, where he is a Distinguished Honorary Fellow and Sussex, where he is also Honorary Professor of English and Drama.

From 1990 to 2002, he was the Principal Associate Director and Executive Produce of RSC. He is an Honorary Associate Artist with the RSC.

In October 2012, he announced that, after 12 years as Artistic Director, he would step down from the Almeida in April 2013 to concentrate on his directing career.
