Meselech Melkamu, Amharic: masalace manaamu; was born 27 April 1985 in Debre Marqos. She is an Ethiopian long distance runner. She beat Meseret Debar to win the 2008 African Athletics Championships gold medal in 5000m. But she is best known for her 2009 run of 29:53.80 over 10,000m, which was, until August 2016, the second-fastest time she ran. She is one of only seven women in history to break the 30-minute barrier, and she is also one of four Ethiopians who have done this feat.
She won a bronze medal on cross-country in 2007 and helped Ethiopian women to win the team title again. She was also awarded a silver medal in the track event at the All-Africa Games. She finished second behind Meseret defar in the 5000m. At the World Championships, she was sixth in that distance.
She continued her bronze medal streak at the 2010 World Cross Country Championships. On 31 July, she won a silver medal at the African Championships in Nairobi, finishing second to Dibaba in the 10,000 metres. To finish the year, she won the Obudu Ranch International Mountain Race in the Obudu local government area of Nigeria, which doubled as the African Mountain Running Championships.
In February 2011, she won her fourth career title at the Jan Meda International Cross Country in Addis Ababa.
The following year, Melkamu won her first major medals as a senior runner. She won bronze medals in the short and long races at the 2006 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. Melkamu also won two team golds. In an event-record 31.41 minutes, she won the Great Ireland Run 10 kms in the next month.
