Mervyn Bennett, a professional lightweight fighter from Wales, was born 20 February 1960 and died in 1998. Bennett was born in Cardiff and became the 1993 Welsh lightweight champion. After defending his title once, he retired from the sport in 1996.

Bennett only fought four times more after becoming champion. In June 1995, he beat Vince Burns via knockout. However, he lost to Dean Phillips in September by points. He defeated Gareth Jordan (Monmouth-based boxer) to defend his Welsh belt in October. Bennett was 11 years older than Jordan and was expected to win the title. However, Bennett delivered the best performance of his life to keep his title. Bennett lost to Karl Taylor in his final fight in March 1996.

Bennett had already moved up to lightweight when he returned to the ring back in 1986. He fought Dave Smith in his first fight at his new weight at the National Sporting Club, London. Bennett won the fight by points and then beat Dave Pratt two more months later. Bennett continued to box just three times before taking a break from the sport again in 1987. After losing his first fight to Edward Lloyd at Cardiff’s National Ice Rink, Bennett did not return to the sport until 1992. Two wins over Mike Morrison in 1992 followed, each on points. This earned him a shot at the vacant Welsh lightweight belt. His opponent was Carl Hook, a Swansea fighter. The fight took place in Cardiff on 27/01/93. Bennett was the Welsh lightweight champion, as the contest was at the top of the card. The ten-round bout lasted ten rounds.
