He is a retired politician from Manitoba. From 2004 to August 31, 2013, he represented Brandon-Souris at the House of Commons of Canada. He was previously a member of Manitoba’s Legislative Assembly from 1995 to 2004 representing Turtle Mountain. He is currently president of Omnitrax (the American railroad company that operates the Churchill rail line). The company, despite being under contract to maintain the line, is trying to sue Canada for not fulfilling its obligations.

Stephen Harper, Conservative leader, named Tweed as the opposition critic for Western Economic Diversification after the 2004 election. Tweed was elected Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities of the House of Commons of Canada in April 2006. He held that position until September 25, 2012. Then, he was elected Chairperson of Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agrifood. Tweed’s resignation will take effect on August 31, 2013. Tweed is now the President of OmniTRAX Canada. This company operates, amongst other things, the Port of Churchill.

Despite the NDP’s historic 2003 election win, Tweed was reelected in Turtle Mountain with ease, receiving 3,956 votes to New Democrat Lonnie Patterson’s 1,893.

Tweed was easily reelected in the 1999 provincial elections, but the Progressive Conservatives were defeated at provincial level by Gary Doer’s New Democratic Party. Tweed, along with the rest in the Filmon ministry, resigned from his portfolio as a cabinet member.
