He appeared with the rest of the original line-up, including Mik Kaminski on violin and Hugh McDowell (cello), in the Discovery music video in 1979. He was there until Jeff Lynne removed string players from his group.

Gale was a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In 1970, he performed his first professional concert with London Palladium Orchestra.
