Melita Ruhn Biography

Melita Ruhn is one of the most popular and richest Artistic Gymnast who was born on April 19, 1965 in Sibiu, Romania. Melita Ruhn, later Fleischer, was a retired Romanian artistic gymnast and represented Romania at the 1980 Summer Olympics. She is a member of the German minority in Romania. She was awarded three Olympic medals for Romania (team, vault, uneven bar) and a perfect ten in the vault optionals competition at the 1980 Olympic Games. She was part of the 1979 Romanian gold medal winning team. She is also a floor and all-around bronze medalist.

Ruhn, then 17, retired from competitive gymnastics at the age of 17. After graduating from high school in Sibiu, she moved to Bucharest in 1984. She attended the sports university in Bucharest, and competed for CSS Sibiu for a brief time. After graduating from college, she met her boyfriend and emigrated to Germany in 1988 with his family. The couple wanted to marry, but the Romanian communist government refused to approve them two years later. She was only able to leave Romania in 1990. She spent the first three months of her stay in Germany, sharing a room with six other people. After three months, she was permitted to move in with her boyfriend. The ex-gymnast began working as a custodian.

She was part of the 1980 Olympic Games silver-winning Romanian Team. In a newspaper interview, she revealed that her ankle was broken just before the Moscow Olympics. Coach Karolyi removed the cast from her ankle and placed it in a cast. The cast was removed from her ankle and she scored a 10. She won silver with the team and also won bronze on vault, uneven bars and vault. Maria Filatova and Steffi Kraker tied for bronze at uneven bars.

Ruhn, Rodica Dunca and Emilia Eberle were all part of the gold-winning team in 1979 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. It was the first time Romania had won the team event at the World Championships. This was also the second consecutive time that the Soviet team hadn’t won either the Olympic or world title since 1952. Melita participated in all four events, and she also contributed to the event by performing a risky routine on uneven bars. She won bronze medals in all around and on the floor, and was seventh in vault and eighth in balance beam.

Ruhn began gymnastics at seven years old at Sport School Club Sibiu, coached by Ana Crihan & Adrian Goreac. She trained later with the Deva national team under Bela Karolyi. She placed fifth at the all-around finals of the European Championships in Copenhagen in 1979, her first major international competition.
