Melissa Lynne McFerrin, a former American college basketball coach, is the current head coach of the Memphis Tigers women’s basketball team. McFerrin was a point guard for the University of Missouri between 1979 and 1983, where she reached the Sweet 16 in 1982. She was granted a contract extension for the 2018-2019 season in 2017. Her base salary is $196,743.
McFerrin joined the New York Liberty in 1997 as an assistant coach. McFerrin spent three years at Liberty, finishing as second-place twice. They lost to Houston in 1999 and 1997. After leaving the Liberty, she moved to Washington Mystics, where she was the general manager for two years. She was named general manager for her first season. The Mystics reached the WNBA playoffs in the first ever season.
In 2004, McFerrin took on her first head coaching position accepting the position at American University. She remained at American for four seasons. In her final year at American, the American Eagle she finished first in the Patriot League and earned an invitation to the WNIT tournament. She was named Patriot League Coach of the year.
McFerrin became the head coach at the University of Memphis in 2008. After an initial losing season, the team put together four consecutive winning seasons and four consecutive postseason invitations, making the finals of the WBI in 2010 and earning invitations to the WNIT in the next three years. In 2013 Memphis became part of the American Athletic Conference. The team has one postseason appearance in the four years since joining the American conference, a WNIT invitation in 2016.
She began her coaching career after college as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist. She spent six years at Central Michigan as an assistant coach after a season at Wayland Baptist. In 1988, she received a master’s in physical education from Central Michigan. McFerrin went on to Ohio State, where she was an assistant for seven more years. McFerrin was the assistant to the Ohio State team, which won the Big Ten championship in 1993. They also finished second in the NCAA tournament. During her time at Ohio State, she was the recruiting coordinator. Due to Katie Smith’s inclusion in the class, the 1992 recruiting class was ranked the #1 recruiting class in the country.
