Melissa Hickey is one of the most popular and richest Australian Rules Footballer who was born on December 18, 1984 in Red Cliffs, Australia. Hickey was sixteen kilometers south of Mildura in Red Cliffs, Victoria. Her family has a rich history in Australian rules football. Her great-great uncle Pat Hickey played in the first round of the Victorian Football League in 1897. He won two premierships for Fitzroy. Reg Hickey was her grandfather’s cousin. Matthew Primus was a former Port Adelaide captain and coach. Peter Hickey was a long-time Mildura resident. At a young age she played Australian rules football, and even played for her primary school, Irymple South Primary Schools. She was unable to play football beyond twelve years old for girls so she switched to netball and basketball. She attended St Josephs College, Mildura as her high school.
Hickey played in her sixth season with VWFL. She also participated in Darebin’s fourth VWFL premiership. Hickey was able to play in thirteen matches for the year. The Melbourne Football Club retained her to play in the 2014 women’s AFL exhibition against the Western Bulldogs. This match was won by the club by forty-six percent at Etihad Stadium. She was present for every match of the 2015 VWFL season, including Darebin’s third consecutive premiership and fifth overall. The Melbourne Football Club retained her for two exhibition matches against Western Bulldogs in 2015. Both matches were won by the club, with the first winning by eight points and second by four. She was reprimanded for striking Jessica Wuestchner, a Western Bulldogs player in the second match. Although it was an exhibition match, suspensions or reprimands were carried over to the VWFL.
After committing herself to a hard-working pre-season leading into the 2016 season, she reaped the rewards by playing in seventeen matches for the year and was named as the centre half-back in the VFL Women’s team of the year. In addition to winning her sixth VWFL premiership and fourth consecutive with the Darebin Falcons. With the expansion of the women’s exhibition series, she played in three matches for Melbourne in 2016, including the all-star match in September against the Western Bulldogs at Whitten Oval as a showcase for the inaugural AFL Women’s (AFLW) season in 2017.
Hickey represented Melbourne in the exhibition games staged prior to the creation of AFL Women’s before being drafted by the club in 2016 as a marquee signing prior to the inaugural AFL Women’s season. She was selected in the inaugural AFL Women’s All-Australian team in 2017, and also represented Victoria in the inaugural AFL Women’s State of Origin match. Following the 2018 season, Hickey was announced as one of four Melbourne players to join Geelong ahead of the club’s inaugural season in the AFL Women’s.
Hickey had to miss the 2012 season because of an ACL injury. She returned to Darebin Falcons in 2013 and won her third VWFL premiership. In the grand final, Hickey received the Lisa Hardeman Medal for the best player at the ground. She was also selected by the Melbourne Football Club as the eleventh woman in the 2013 women’s draft. In 2013, she played in the inaugural women’s AFL exhibition match against Western Bulldogs at Melbourne Cricket Ground. This resulted in a three-point win. She represented Victoria in the 2013 AFL Women’s National Championships. This included winning the championships as well as being named the best player in the final.

Melissa Hickey, born 18 December 1984, is an Australian rules footballer who played in the AFL Women’s. In the club’s two first AFL Women’s season, she was Geelong’s captain. She represented the St Albans Spurs and Geelong in the Victorian Women’s Football League/VFL Women’s for 11 seasons. Hickey was a member of the VWFL/VFLW and won seven premierships. She also represented Victoria three times, and was the VFL Women’s team of year.
Hickey was a Darebin Falcons player in the Victorian Women’s Football League in 2009. She won two premierships during her first two seasons at the club and represented Victoria at the AFL Women’s National Championships 2010. For the 2011 season, she switched clubs and joined St Albans. She played all season, until she injured her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), during which she missed St Albans’ grand finale victory. Despite the injury, her season was awarded with All-Australian honors. She represented Victoria at the AFL Women’s National Championships for the second year in a row.
In July 2016, Hickey was announced as one of two marquee player signings for the Melbourne Football Club, alongside Daisy Pearce. She was announced as the vice-captain of the club alongside Elise O’Dea in January 2017. She debuted in Melbourne’s inaugural match against Brisbane at Casey Fields in a fifteen- point loss, where she recorded thirteen disposals and three marks. In her second match, she was tasked with playing on Collingwood marquee forward, Moana Hope, and kept her goalless when playing on her in the nineteen point win at IKON Park. The next week, she kicked her first AFLW goal in the fourteen point win over the Western Bulldogs at Whitten Oval, and she was named in Melbourne’s best players by AFL Media and The Age. At the end of the season, Hickey was listed in the 2017 All-Australian team.
