She has been the District Attorney of Queens for the past year. She is a Democrat and was previously the Queens Borough President. Katz served as a New York City Councilwoman between 2002 and 2009. In 2009, Katz had run for City Comptroller. In June 2019, Katz won Queens County’s Democratic nomination for District Attorney. She won the general election in November 2019.

From 1994 to 1999 Katz was a member of the New York State Assembly. She represented Queens’ 28th district, which included Forest Hills and Rego Park as well as parts of Middle Village, Glendale, and Middle Village. As an Assembly member, Katz was a part of 16 bills that were made laws, including important health care initiatives. The law that required HMOs to give women direct access to gynecological services without requiring them to see a primary physician was authored by Katz. She was also the Chair of the Subcommittee for Urban Health. She also introduced several bills to increase penalties in various forms of assault.

Katz then became Director of Community Boards for the Office of the Queens Borough President from 1999 to 2002, before winning a seat on the New York City Council, where she served from 2002 to 2009), representing the 29th Council District, which included Forest Hills, Rego Park, Kew Gardens and parts of Maspeth, South Elmhurst and Richmond Hill. Katz served as Chair of the Standing Committee on Land Use, which was responsible for approving rezoning measures for wide-ranging pockets of the city, including Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Jamaica. As chair of the committee, Katz oversaw the rezoning of 6,000 city blocks, including the Greenpoint-Williamsburg rezoning in 2005.
