Melanie Hawtin, a Canadian 1.5-point wheelchair basketball player, was born July 20, 1988. She was a T54 class wheelchair runner and was the Canadian national champion at the 100 m in 2008. She was the Ontario Wheelchair Sports Association’s Junior Female Champion of the Year four times and the Female Athlete the Year twice. She switched to wheelchair basketball in 2012 and won a gold medal in the 2014 Women’s World Wheelchair Basketball Championship.

However, wheelchair basketball can be played upright. Hawtin was a member of the Burlington Vipers and represented Team Ontario at the CWBL Women’s National Championships 2013. In January 2014, she was selected to the national team’s training camp in Las Vegas. This was something that Hawtin had never done as a wheelchair racer. She was part the team that won gold at the 2014 Women’s World Wheelchair Basketball Championships in Toronto in July 2014 and silver at August 2015 Parapan American Games.

In April 2012, she received a diagnosis of hydrocephalus. Her brain was being put under pressure by a buildup of fluid. Although the surgery was successful, she was unable to bend over and continue her sport for long periods. She was offered a piece of facial tissue but said she would need the whole thing.
