He is particularly skilled in the half-marathon. He is an emigrant from Japan and has won the Sapporo Half Marathon three times, the Kagawa Marugame Half Marathon twice. Both of these races are his course records. Mogusu was also a member of the Kenyan ekiden relay team that set the world record of 1:57.06 at 2005 Chiba Ekiden. Mogusu ran a half-marathon in 59 minutes 48 seconds. He also competed at 2008 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships.
Only Daniel Gitau was able to challenge Mogusu at the 2009 Kagawa Marugame Half Marathon. However, his front-running strategies prevailed and he won his second title in 1:00:37. Mogusu was in Kenya when he was involved in a car accident in March 2009. He, Daniel Gitau, and Cosmas Osmas Ondiba were all uninjured. However, Sho Kimura, the new Team Aidem coach, was admitted to hospital. Mogusu was in shock and guilt over the incident that interrupted his training for that year. In May 2009, he set a 10,000-m record of 27:26.56 at Niigata. Although he had planned to make his marathon debut in the Fukuoka Marathon 2009, he pulled out around the 30km mark.
He competed in 2008’s Middle-East competition for the first-time, finishing fifth and winning the highly-stakes Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon. His season’s best was 1:00:35. Mogusu beat Daniel Gitau to win the Kanto University Track & Field Championships. He also recorded a personal best of 10,000m in 27:27.64, a championship record that falls within the Olympic “A” standard for this distance. Although he did not make it to the Olympic team, he kept winning on the road racing circuit. He won the Sapporo Half Marathon at 4km and took his third win on the course. He was chosen for the Kenyan team in the 2008 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. However, he did not finish the race in Rio de Janeiro.

Mogusu immigrated to Japan in his youth. He attended high school and then moved on to Yamanashi Gakuin University. His Kenyan peers were confused by his decision to pursue his education and not run professionally. Mogusu stressed the importance of competing in the ekiden road relay at college level under the supervision of Ueda, the University coach. In July 2005, he won the Sapporo Half Marathon. He set a personal record of 1:01.28 and beat Erick Wainaina, an Olympic medallist. He was joined by Josephat Ndambiri and Martin Mathathi, Daniel Mwangi. Onesmus Nyerere, John Kariuki and Daniel Mwangi for the Chiba Ekiden. Mogusu ran the fourth leg of the 10 km in 27:56 to extend Kenya’s lead. This helped the team set a new world record of 1:57.06 for the marathon road relay. Mogusu continued to be a success in ekiden races, winning only one race and setting stage records on five occasions.
In 2006, he attempted to defend his Sapporo Half Marathon title, but he finished in fourth place, just a minute behind Cyrus Gichobi Njui. In February 2006, he won the Kagawa Marugame Half Marathon with a course record of 59.48. This was his first half-marathon under an hour. He won the second title at Sapporo Half Marathon, continuing his winning streak. His finishing time of 59.54 was a course record. This was his first sub-60-minute run in the course’s 23 year history. He won the Ichinoseki International Half Marathon in 59:58, his last road race of 2007.
He took an early lead at the Marugame Half Marathon in February 2011, but slowed and ended up in third. The opposite occurred at the Sapporo race in June as he overtook runners in the second half of the race to claim a clear second place. He finished second again in Sapporo the following year, placing behind Martin Mathathi.
