Mehreen Faruqi is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on July 8, 1963 in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. Mehreen Saeed Faruqi, a senator for New South Wales, was born 8 July 1963. She represents the Greens. Her appointment was made to fill the casual vacancy created by Lee Rhiannon’s resignation. She was previously a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from June 2013 to August 2018.

Faruqi beat Lee Rhiannon, the incumbent New South Wales Greens senator, in a contest for the spot on the NSW Greens Senate ballot for the 2019 federal election. On 15 August 2018, Rhiannon, who was serving as senator from New South Wales, resigned and Faruqi was elected to fill the vacant seat. On 20 August 2018, she was sworn into office, becoming the first Muslim female senator in Australian history.

In February 2018, Faruqi attempted to block the Christian Friends of Israeli Communities from hosting an event on the basis of Israel’s settlement policy in the West Bank

Faruqi was re-elected in the 2019 federal election, securing 8.7% of the state’s vote, with a swing of 1.32% in her favour.

Faruqi, who is vocally pro-choice, introduced the first bill in parliament to decriminalise abortions in New South Wales in June 2014. Faruqi also advocates for sustainable transport and public transport. She successfully introduced a motion to parliament in March 2014 requesting the release of all government documents related to the WestConnex motorway business case. This revealed evidence of the NSW government’s plan to mass outsource public service work, as well as uncertainty among WestConnex staff members and advisors about the project’s viability.

Faruqi was born and raised in Lahore (Pakistan). Faruqi’s father was a civil engineer and she grew-up on the UET campus. In 1988, she graduated from UET with a Bachelor in Engineering (Civil), and then worked as a structural engineering engineer. She is also a civil engineer, as are her older brothers, younger sisters, husband and father-in law. Faruqi moved to Sydney with her husband Omar in 1992. She began attending University of New South Wales (UNSW) after her father, who had studied there in the 1950s under the Colombo Plan. In 1994 she received her Master of Engineering Science degree. She then went on to receive a doctorate of environmental engineering in 2000. Faruqi was born in Port Macquarie, and moved back to Sydney in 2006. She has two children with her husband, Osman Faruqi (a Junkee political journalist).

Faruqi joined Greens in Port Macquarie in 2004 and ran in the Legislative Assembly seat for Heffron in 2011. She was also a candidate in the 2012 by- election. Faruqi was elected to replace Cate Faehrmann on the Legislative Council, becoming the first Muslim woman to become a member an Australian parliament. Her term began on 19 June 2013, and she was elected to the Council.

Faruqi resigned her position in the parliament after giving her farewell speech on 14 August 2018.
