Born in Takasaki (Gunma), Kinukawa attended Sendai Ikue high school, a school that is well-known for its athletic program. Kinukawa was first to make an impact on the national junior circuit when she won the Fukuoka International Cross Country junior race and finished second at the Chiba Cross Country junior race two weeks later. She was then selected for the 2006 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, also held in Fukuoka. The sixteen-year old came in fourteenth and helped the Japanese girls win a bronze medal. Later that April, she turned her attention to the track and ran a national junior record of 10,000m at the Hyogo Relay Carnival. She placed second to Lucy Wangui, with a time of 31:35.27, which made her eleventh in the all-time junior rankings.

She placed third behind Kenyan opposition at 2012 Chiba Cross-Country in February and was the only Japanese woman to make it to the podium.

Kinukawa was the first high school student ever to win the Fukuoka Senior Cross Country title in 2007. She chose to concentrate on her track performances as the 2007 World Championships in Athletics were to be held in Osaka.
