Her father, an Egyptologist and classicist, taught at Saint Ann’s as well as Pierrepont. O’Rourke was born in Brooklyn, and spent many summers in Vermont. O’Rourke was a serious child and developed a love for books as a youngster. After her mother gave her a notebook and blank pages to help her write, she discovered a love for writing at five.
O’Rourke was appointed editor of The Yale Review on July 1, 2019. This coincided with its 200th anniversary.
Norton published her first collection of poetry, Halflife in 2007. O’Rourke’s second book of poems, Halflife, was published by Norton in 2007. She lives in Brooklyn, New York. O’Rourke started an internship at The New Yorker as an editor immediately after she graduated from Yale. O’Rourke was promoted to fiction/nonfiction editor at The New Yorker in 2000. She is one of the youngest editors at the magazine. She also worked as a freelance contributor editor for the literary quarterly Grand Street. In 2002, O’Rourke joined Slate, an online magazine covering news, culture and politics. From late 2002 to mid 2009, she was the culture and literary editor at Grand Street. O’Rourke attended St. Ann’s through high school. She earned a bachelor’s of arts degree in English language and literature from Yale University in 1997. She later returned to school and earned a master of fine arts degree in poetry from Warren Wilson College in 2005.
