The first published Scottish Gaelic short-story by Bateman, Chanadh Gun D’chur I as dha in 2011, was published in the short story collection Saorsa, published by CLAR.
Bateman was born and raised in Edinburgh. She completed her PhD in medieval Scottish Gaelic language and religious poetry, as well as studying Celtic at the University of Aberdeen. Between 1991 and 1998, she taught Scottish Gaelic at Aberdeen University. In 1998, she moved to Skye to join Sabhal Mor Ostaig Gaelic College. She is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at St Andrews and has taught Scottish Gaelic at Edinburgh University.
