Mechelle was briefly injured again but she recovered and became a Pan American double silver medalist, 2007 World Champion and 2008 Olympian.

Mechelle was a great athlete at Oxon Hill High School. After lettering in track and soccer, Mechelle decided to run seriously. She held the Maryland state record for the 55m for three years, with a time in 6.94 seconds. Mechelle was the 300m regional champion, and she was the MVP of her high- school indoor and outdoor track teams three years running. She was a member of the Prince George’s County All-County Team for three years and the All- Metropolitan Team for the third year. This team represents the top few athletes from the Maryland, DC, Northern Virginia, and Virginia areas. Her high school track team finished third in the county, and in the top three at the state championships twice. Mechelle’s 4 x400 m relay team won three consecutive state titles and placed third at the National High School Indoor Track & Field Championships 1997. Mechelle was a nationally-recognized success story, winning national championships in the USATF Junior Olympics. She also competed for the Rising Stars track team in the USATF Junior Olympics. Mechelle was also busy on the track, becoming the Senior Class Vice president and Homecoming queen in her senior year. She enjoyed playing the flute and oboe in the band. After a thorough elimination process, Mechelle and her sister decided to run track at University of South Carolina. They both received full scholarships.
From 1998 to 2004, Lewis was a student at the University of South Carolina. She earned her bachelor’s and masters degrees in Mass Communications. She was an All-American three-time athlete in the 60m and 200m as well as the 4×100 m relay. With a time of 6.84 seconds, she held the school record for the 55m for two consecutive years. Mechelle was also part of the 2002 Track & Field Outdoor Championships winning team that brought the first ever national championship in any sport to her college. For the honor, she accompanied the team to Washington to meet President Bush. Lewis was awarded the Highest GPA honor by the University of South Carolina in her freshman class. She graduated with honors with a 4.0 GPA. During her senior year, she was also recognized by the American Advertising Federation as one of the “Top 25 Most Promising Students from Minorities” in 2002.
Lewis represented the United States at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China. She competed on the 4×100 meter relay together with Angela Williams, Torri Edwards and Lauryn Williams. In their first round heat they were however disqualified and eliminated.
