Mazlan Othman Biography

Mazlan Othman is one of the most popular and richest Physicist who was born on December 11, 1951 in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. Born 11 December 1951, Dato’ Seri Majlan binti Omman is a Malaysian astronaut whose pioneering work helped Malaysia participate in space exploration. She was the country’s first astrophysicist and helped to establish a curriculum for astrophysics at the university. From 2007 to 2014, she was the Director General of Angkasa (the Malaysian National Space Agency) and the Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (Vienna).

Tuanku Ja’afar, the tenth Yang di–Pertuan Agong, was named in the 1997 Agong’s Honours List. She was awarded the federal decoration and the order Panglima Jasa Negara (for meritorious services) on Mazlan. This gave her the honorific “Datuk”.

Mazlan was reappointed as UNOOSA director in 2007 by Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon, and left Angkasa to return to the post that December. At UNOOSA she dealt with issues of international co-operation in space, prevention of collisions and space debris, use of space-based remote sensing platforms for sustainable development, co-ordination of space law between countries, and the risks posed by near-earth asteroids, among other topics.

In 2009, for “her work in developing astronomy education in Malaysia and her leading national and international role in space science”, the Institute of Physics awarded Mazlan its President’s Medal.

In 1997, Mazlan was also awarded the honorary doctor of science degree by her alma mater, University of Otago.

Born in Seremban in Malaysia, Mazlan went to Kolej Tunku Kurshiah a prominent Malaysian boarding school in Seremban. Mazlan’s aptitude for math led her to enroll in a science program. Although her family wanted her to be a doctor, she chose to study physics. On a Colombo plan scholarship, she attended University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand, and earned a BSc. In 1975, she was awarded the BSc (Honours). After graduating from Otago, she joined the National University of Malaysia (UKM), where she was a tutor. However, her scholarship was extended and she returned to Otago to earn her Ph.D. in Physics in 1981. This is the first time a woman has earned this degree since 1869, when the University was established.

In 1990, Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad appointed her to head the Planetarium Division in the Prime Minister’s Department. This division was responsible for the development of Planetarium Negara in Kuala Lumpur. Mazlan was appointed Director General of the government’s Space Science Studies Division in 1993. She launched a microsatellite program. The following year, she was awarded a full professorship.

In November 1999, Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations, appointed Mazlan as Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in Vienna. At the request of Prime Minister Mahathir, she returned to Malaysia in July 2002 to serve for five years as the founding Director General of Angkasa, the Malaysian National Space Agency, where her work led to the launch of the first Malaysian astronaut, Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor.
