May Sweet is one of the most popular and richest Singer who was born on February 13, 1962 in Yangon, Yangon Region, Myanmar. May Sweet began her career at the age of 14. Her first album was released with Zaw One, a prominent Burmese filmmaker at the time. Her mother was her second album, which featured many of her mother’s 1950s hits. May Sweet, a classical Burmese musician, turned to Burmese songs from prewar (1930s) with Maung Kyemon and added Western music and arrangements. She became a household name when her covers were hugely popular at age 17.

From the late 1970s through the 1980s May Sweet was Burmese’s dominant female singer. She bridged popular singers such as L Khun Yi and Nwe Yin Win to Maykhala in the mid-1980s and Hayma Ne Win to Connie in late 1980s. Other male singers collaborated with her, including Kaiser. Her repackaged Western covers albums, Panthi Thachinmya (lit. Apple Songs, written by Thukhamein Hlaing (a successful cover singer) and a series classic Burmese covers albums by Maung Kyemon. Some of her covers were written originally for male singers and became much more popular than the original songs. Because she was the most popular choice of songwriters at the time, she also had many “original” hits. Maung is her most well-known song and signature song.

At the peak of her popularity in the early to mid-1980s, the fourth daughter of five-time Myanmar Academy Award winner Myint Myint Khin also starred in a number of films where she appeared with leading men of the day like Pyay Nyein and Kyaw Thu. In the 1990s, she chose to focus on her music career, and stopped making films. Though the Burmese pop music scene had changed from slow rock/pop to Europop, techno, heavy metal and hip-hop, she stayed with her tried-and-true pop ballads. With her strong fan base, she was able to keep releasing new albums. Ironically, the next generation of female singers promptly covered many of her popular songs (both covers and originals) though none achieved her success. The songs remain closely identified with her. The longevity of her popularity and dominance at the top remains unparalleled in Myanmar where even most successful female singers do not last more than a few years. To date, she remains the only singer to have achieved success in both Western-style pop and classic Burmese music genres.

May Sweet left the Burmese music scene and the country in the late 1990s after she was married to a Burmese-American from New York City in 1997. She resides with her husband in Delaware. They have 1 daughter. She continues to perform for Burmese expatriate audiences around the world. Later, she returned to Myanmar and sings her songs again and make many shows. Now, she is as a judge in Myanmar Idol.

Mi Swe recorded a duet with Nwe Yuin Win shortly after her 1970 first stage performance. Myint Myint Khain, her daughter’s stage name, chose the name right before the album was released. May Sweet was the result of Burmese wordplay (called Zagalein), of the name Mi Swe. (IPA: [mi shwe]). To May Sweet ([me shwi]). (Zagalein can be compared to vesre, in Argentine Spanish or verlan, in French. It reverses the sounds of words to create a slang name or colloquial title.
