Ongkili, the nephew of Joseph Pairin Kitingan, former Sabah Chief Minister and Jeffrey Kitingan (who is also a former vice president of the People’s Justice Party), is an Orthodox Christian.
Ongkili was elected to Parliament during the 1995 general elections (at that time, the Kota Marudu Seat was called Bandau). After the 2004 election, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s successor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi appointed him as a Minister within the Prime Minister’s Department. Ongkili was appointed to National Unity and led the inception of the Khidmat Negara conscription programme.
In 2008, Ongkili became the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation. Then after his winning in the 2013 general election, Ongkili has been appointed as Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister.
Ongkili was also a member of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly until the 2008 election, when he stood aside from his Tandek seat.
He was held under the Internal Security Act for 59 consecutive days in 1991. This was part of a series of political arrests that were made between 1990 and 1991 in Malaysia to stop opposition leaders from Sabah. They were accused of plotting to seize the state from Malaysia. Born 26 October 1953, Datuk Seri Panglima Doctor. Maximus Johnity Ongkili is a Malaysian politician. He currently serves as Minister in Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah Affairs and Sarawak Affairs). He was the former Minister of Energy and Green Technology and Water and is still a member of Parliament of Malaysia for Kota Marudu, Sabah. He is a member the United Sabah Party (Malay Parti Bersatu Sabah, or PBS) within the United Alliance (Sabah), coalition, and a component the Perikatan Nasional(PN) coalition.
Ongkili, who was then a senior researcher and deputy chiefdirector of IDS, was also an electoral press consultant to Joseph Pairin Kitingan, the Chief Minister of Sabah at the time of his arrest. On March 2, he was unconditionally released.
Ongkili was originally an opposition politician but joined the government when the PBS joined the Barisan Nasional coalition in 2002.
