Goldt stopped contributing to Titanic in 1998. However, a few articles continued to appear. He resumed his regular contributions in 2005. Goldt has worked with Stephan Katz, a cartoonist, to create comic strips which have appeared in Titanic and Die Zeit, as well as a number of books. He was awarded the Kleist prize in 2008 on Daniel Kehlmann’s recommendation.

Goldt began writing a column in Berlin’s underground magazine Ich und mein Staubsauger (“Me, my vacuum cleaner”) in 1987. Goldt was born in Weende, now Gottingen to Silesia-born working-class parents. To avoid conscription, he moved to West Berlin in 1977. After beginning his training as a photographer he soon switched to music and worked as a guide for tourists. He chose to go by the pseudonym Max Goldt during this period.

Goldt and Gerd Pasemann formed the core of the underground group Aroma Plus in

1978. They released two self-published albums, before disbanding. In 1981, Pasemann and Goldt formed Foyer des Arts. Pasemann provided lyrics and vocals, while Goldt was the one who created the music. Foyer des Arts was signed to Warner Music’s German branch WEA. It enjoyed moderate commercial success during the New German Wave. Their single hit, #36 on the West German singles charts, was Wissenswertes uber Erlangen (“Things Worth Knowing About Erlangen”) which is a satirical look at Goldt’s experiences as a tourist guide (1982). Foyer des Arts didn’t officially disband until 1995. However, they were in hiatus for most of that time. Goldt began to record solo albums at home with experimental music, sometimes instrumental, and also Sprechgesang and spoken words with various effects. Many of the lyrics, which were often quite strange, were also published by Goldt as books.
