He was the great-grandson (on his maternal line) of German chemist Justus Von Liebig and the child of historian Hans Delbruck. He was born in Berlin, Germany. His brother and his two brothers-in law were executed by Nazi SS because of their involvement in a 1944 plot against Adolf Hitler.
