Maurizio Landini is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on August 7, 1961 in Castelnovo ne' Monti, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Maurizio Landini was born near Reggio Emilia, in Castelnovo ne’ Monti in 1961. Landini was the second-oldest of five children. His father, who fought alongside the Italian partisans in World War II was a cantoniere (a road maintenance worker) who had to live close to the workplace because of service requirements. His mother was a housewife. Landini was born in San Polo d’Enza. He attended middle school and then went on to the secondary school for building surveyors. However, he was forced from the school by financial problems and began working as an apprentice welder at a cooperative in Reggio Emilia’s engineering sector.

Landini was elected General Secretary of FIOM on June 1, 2010. Landini was criticized for his offshoring practices during his time as secretary. Simon and Schuster published his book, “Change the Factory to Change the World: FIAT and the Trade Union and the Left’s Absence” in 2011. This book is a book- interview that covers the entire history of FIAT, and in particular his relationship to Marchionne. He was the leader of the metalworkers and was involved in the Ilva scandal.

In 2014 Landini became a hard critic and opponent of centre-left Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi. Tensions rose up due to Renzi’s huge labour market reform, called Jobs Act, which provided, among others, the abolition of Article 18 of Workers’ Statute, which protected workers from unjustified dismissals. The proposal was heavily criticised by Landini and CGIL’s General Secretary Susanna Camusso, who announced a public protest. On 25 October, almost one million people took part in a mass protest in Rome, organised by the CGIL in opposition to the labour reforms of the government. Some high- profile members of the left-wing faction of the Democratic Party also participated in the protest. On 8 November more than 100,000 public employees protested in Rome in a demonstration organised by the three trade unions. Despite the mass protests, in December, the Parliament approved the Jobs Act.

In June 2015, Landini launched Social Coalition (CS), a transversal political organization, whose goals were the protection of workers and the middle class. The organization, that reunited several leftist thinkers, like the jurist Stefano Rodotà, the politician Vittorio Agnoletto, the former communist terrorists Oreste Scalzone and Franco Piperno, never became an official party and was disbanded after few months.

Landini was elected as the National Secretariat of FIOM on 30 March 2005. He was responsible for negotiations with companies like Piaggio, Indesit, and Electrolux over these years. Gianni Rinaldini was his General Secretary at the time. He closely monitored the negotiations to renew the contract for metalworkers in 2009. This was under the centre-right government Silvio Berlusconi. Landini headed the delegation of the FIOM in negotiations to renew contracts with small- and medium-sized businesses.
