Mauricio Pozo Crespo, a Ecuadorian politician and banker, was born January 18, 1959 in Quito, Ecuador. He was the vice-presidential nominee alongside Cynthia Viteri during Ecuador’s 2017 general election.

Mauricio Pizozo was elected Minister of Economy and Finance of Ecuador on January 3, 2003, the same year Lucio Gutierrez took office. Pozo was described by some as an “orthodox economist”, who supported dollarization of Ecuador’s national currency. Pozo advocated dollarization of the national currency and used much of the country’s oil revenues to pay off debt. For reasons that were not clear at the time, he resigned from his position on June 1, 2004. Representatives of Indigenous people criticized the austerity policies implemented by Gutierrez and Pozo for their effect on poverty. However, government supporters linked them to a 3.5% annual growth rate and a lower inflation rate than 3% in 2003.

He pursued various courses in finance and economics in USA and Europe. In 2010 he obtained a diploma from the Global Health Delivery Project at Harvard University, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

He was Governor of the IMF (International Monetary Fund), IDB (Inter-American Development Bank), and Principal Director of CAF, the Development Bank of Latin America. From 1998 to 2001, he was an analyst at the Economist Intelligence Unit (London)

Pozo graduated high school from Caracas in Venezuela. He earned a BA in economics at Universidad Catolica del Ecuador (PUCE) in 1985. He also graduated magna cum-laude from the Economics Institute at the University of Colorado that year. He completed his postgraduate studies in 1987 at Notre Dame in Indiana, USA. Pozo was granted the Isabel la Católica Award awarded by King Juan Carlos I of Spain, in July 2004, and the Consular Excellence Award by the Honorable Consular Body of Quito, April 26, 2005. He has also been Dean and professor at PUCE and other universities. He has published numerous articles, analyses and books.
