While at Columbia College Chicago, Herman was working in the English Department. Herman was then invited to replace Babes In Toyland’s former bassist Michelle Leon. Herman was at the time the bassist of Cherry Rodriguez in Chicago.
Herman was again reunited with her Libertyville High School classmates Morello and Jones on 1993’s Lollapalooza, when Babes in Toyland, Rage Against the Machine, and Tool were all playing the alternative rock tour that year.
Herman went on to work as associate editor for Musician magazine and freelance journalist for Rolling Stone. In 1998, Herman started her own company, Pollyanna, which was involved in the music business in various forms, including management, booking, promotion, publicity, and music publishing. In 2000, she produced Hank Williams III’s CMT-circulated video “You’re the Reason”, directed by P.W. Long.
Herman met Shannon Selberg, the vocalist of the Minneapolis noise rock band Cows before they formed Babes in Toyland. Herman, her brother who was injured in a restaurant accident that resulted in him losing his hand, inherited her father’s bass guitar and began her first band, M&M Stigmata. Before writing songs or practicing, the band booked a performance. Babes in Toyland’s Kat Bjelland attended the debut show at Minneapolis’ Uptown Bar. The band’s guitarist and singer were both severely injured and unable play the guitar. Bjelland recorded the show which was performed with vocals, drums, bass and guitars.

She studied Film Studies at the University of Minnesota and was a minor in journalism. Herman returned to Illinois in January 1985 during her freshman year of winter break at the University of Minnesota to produce The Season of the Snow Bitch. It was produced with LHS alumni Morello and Jones.
