Alahuhta started his career at Nokia in 1975 as a Research Engineer. He was a Sales Director at Rank Xerox from 1982 to 1984. In 1984, he returned as a Sales Manager for the Transmissions Systems Business Unit. This was at the time that Nokia began its global expansion in its telecommunications network business. After many roles, with increasing responsibilities he was elected President of Nokia Telecommunications in 1993. He also became a Member of the Executive Board. He was elected President of Nokia Mobile Phones in 1998. In 2004, he was made Executive Vice President and Chief Strategist Officer of the Nokia Group. Alahuhta was the leader of KONE’s global market share, which doubled between 2005 and 2014. It also saw six fold in market capitalization under his leadership.
Matti Alahuhta has earned his M.Sc. (Tech.) In 1976 and D.Sc. (Tech.) (Tech.) His dissertation was entitled “Global Growth Strategies to High Technology Challengers”. Alahuhta also completed executive education at IMD Business School in Switzerland, and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Tampere University of Technology.
