He arrived at Johnson Space Center in Texas on 12 May 2020 with Oleg Novitsky, Sergey Kud–Sverchkov and Pytr Dubrov, an ESA astronaut. They were training for the 2019-20 coronavirus pandemic.

The European Space Agency selected him as an astronaut in July 2015. He worked in Cologne for the European Astronaut Corps on Lunar exploration projects, and was a Eurocom International Space Station flight control controller.

Maurer was a graduate of the Saarland University in Germany where he earned a degree as a materials scientist. He has a MBA in management and also studied at the University of Leeds. Since 1999, he has been a researcher and earned his doctorate in engineering from the Institute of Materials Sciences of the RWTH Aachen University.
