Matthias Eisenberg, born 15 January 1956, is a German concert organist/harpsichordist and cantor. He is best known for his concerts with Giora Feidman, the clarinetist. He has conducted master classes around the world. He has recorded the entire organ works of J. S. Bach as well as improvisations. He also conducted Bach cantatas on the harpsichord with the Thomanerchor.
Eisenberg is an organ specialist and has been involved with many new organs and renovations. Eisenberg recorded all of J. S. Bach’s organ works at several organs in Lower Saxony. He recorded with Mathias Schmutzler and Joachim Schafer among others. Many of his CDs include improvisations. He was a conductor and recorded Bach’s secular cantata Mer Hahn en Neue Oberkeet, BWV 212, from the harpsichord with soloists Juliane Claus and Martin Krumbiegel in
- In 1998, he recorded Bach’s church cantata Ich Armer Mensch, Ich Sundenknecht. In 1998, he also recorded songs from Schemellis Gesangbuch with Thomanerchor members of two generations, who were playing the organ.
In 2003 Eisenberg was appointed Kirchenmusikdirektor (church music director) in Hannover. Also in 2003, Schleswig-Holstein’s Prime Minister Heide Simonis awarded him the honorary title of professor, for his outstanding contributions for organ music.
Eisenberg didn’t return to West Germany in 1986 after he had been on a tour. After serving in churches in Bad Homburg, Hanover and elsewhere, Eisenberg has been a freelance organist, harpsichordist, and as a member of chamber ensembles, symphony orchestras, and in other cities in Europe, Asia, North America, South America, and Australia. Eisenberg has been cantor at St. Severin, Westerland on Sylt since 1992. Eisenberg has been a Zwickau church organist and musician since November 2004.

Eisenberg was born in Dresden and began his career as an organist in various churches at the age of nine. For five years, he was a Dresdner Kreuzchor member. He completed the 1978 A-exam at the Hochschule fur Musik und Theater Felix Mendelssohn bartholdy in Leipzig. He was the winner in several international competitions during his studies. This included the Weimar improvisation competition. In 1976, he was awarded the prize at the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition.
Kurz before completion of the Gewandhaus’s new building, Kurt Masur made arrangements for Eisenberg to become the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester’s organist. He was also a harpsichordist for the Leipzig Bach Orchestra. In a production on Johann Sebastian Bach’s life, he appeared on East German television. In 1983, he was a guest at the Bach Festival in Graz. He also appeared at the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart in 1985. Eisenberg was an invited professor of organ at the International Music Seminar, Weimar in 1985. He taught master classes in Stockholm, Buenos Aires and other cities.
In January 2001, Eisenberg again appeared at the Gewandhaus, after an absence of 15 years. He performed at the Rheingau Musik Festival with clarinetist Giora Feidman in Eberbach Abbey.
