He founded the iconic Rm 608, an art gallery for visual and performing artists, in an abandoned building on Seattle’s Capitol Hill in 1992. The “small but powerful” (The Stranger), organization was the launch pad for local talent such as David Schmader and the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Plays, Kia Sian and Kristen Kosmas. It presented more than 200 world-premiere pieces of theater and performance art over its two-year existence, many of which were continued runs off-Broadway in New York City. The organization’s life span was planned into the structure and it was scheduled to close in 1994. Richter was quoted by The Seattle Weekly saying that organizations should be closed in the same manner as performances, so that the audience can clap and go home and reflect on what it meant.
