Nixon was a nationally renowned amateur golfer from an early age. He won the Boys Amateur Championship at 17 years old and participated in the Jacques Leglise trophy that year. From 2006 to 2007, he played for the national team and was ranked 14th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. He was 7th in the Scratch Player World Amateur Ranking. On 24 August 2005, he broke the Pannal Golf Club course record in Harrogate, England. He shot 63 and 9-under-par. He lost to Jin Jeong, South Korea’s eventual winner of The Amateur Championship 2010, reaching the semifinals.
Nixon was able to pass all three stages of the European Tour qualifying school in the autumn 2010 and earned his playing rights for 2011. He decided to become a professional. He had a promising start to the season but failed to make the cut between July and November. However, he returned to Qualifying School at year’s end to regain his card.
