Emerton introduced the concept of complete cohomology. This idea has been a valuable tool in the study and application of the p–adic theory on automorphic forms. He combined this theory with Colmez’s work on the p–adic Langlands program to publish a 2011 preprint that proved many cases of Fontaine-Mazur conjecture.
Emerton was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan, and then he joined Northwestern University’s mathematics department in 2001 as an assistant professor. In 2005, he was promoted to associate professor and in 2008 to full professor. In 2011, he joined the University of Chicago faculty.
