Caws, the son Peter James Caws (and Mary Ann Caws) was born in New York City. Caws’ mother was raised in Wilmington, North Carolina. His father was born near Southall in Middlesex. Matthew Caws was born in Southall, Middlesex to university professor parents. They took sabbaticals both in Paris and the Vaucluse, Provence, which helped Matthew learn French early on. Caws’ mother is Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature and English at the Graduate Center at CUNY. She lives in New York City. Caws’ father, University professor of philosophy at George Washington University, is a Washington resident. Caws and his parents divorced in 1987. His mother, Dr. Boyce Bennett, married him in 2007. His father married Nancy Breslin M.D. M.F.A., who was a psychiatrist and fine art photographer. Caws’ great grandmother was Margaret Walthour Lippitt, a painter.

Minor Alps was formed by Caws and Juliana Hatfield, a singer-songwriter. On October 29, 2013, Barsuk Records released the debut album of the duo, “Get There”.
