Stites was a graduate of Festus High School, Festus, Missouri. After graduating from Festus High School, Stites enrolled at Jefferson College. He played college baseball. As a sophomore, he had a 9-2 record with a loss and a 1.69 earned-run average (ERA). He was also named a junior college All- American. He played collegiate baseball in summer 2010 with the Falmouth Commodores, Cape Cod Baseball League. Stites was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 33rd round. He was the 1,000th overall pick of the 2010 MLB Draft. Stites decided not to sign and instead transferred to Missouri where he played baseball for the Missouri Tigers. He was the leader of the team with 92 innings pitched.
