Shoemaker graduated from Trenton High School, Trenton, Michigan in 2004. After graduating from Trenton High School, Shoemaker enrolled at Eastern Michigan University. There he played college baseball with the Eastern Michigan Eagles baseball club in the Mid-American Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I. He was a sophomore in 2007 and saved 14 games for EMU. He was also named to the All-MAC second team. He was fifth in NCAA Division I for saves and set the EMU single season record. In his junior season, he returned to the rotation. Shoemaker was a junior pitcher who had a record of 6-7 wins and a 4.83 earned run in 15 games. After his junior year at EMU, Shoemaker was able to graduate and forgo his final year of college eligibility.
Shoemaker was not selected in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft. He played college summer baseball in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim signed him as a free agent. He was awarded a $10,000 signing bonus. Shoemaker started the 2009 season as a relief pitcher for the Cedar Rapids Kernals in the Class A Midwest League. He had a 1-0 record with a 6.57 ERA and seven wins in his first seven games. In May, he was promoted to extended spring training. In June, he returned to Cedar Rapids. In 2010, he pitched for Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, Class A-Advanced California League.
Shoemaker began the 2011 season with the Salt Lake Bees of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League, and was demoted to the Arkansas Travelers of the Class AA Texas League in May. He appeared in the Texas League All-Star Game in June. He was named the Texas League Pitcher of the Year and the Angels’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year, after leading the league with 12 wins, a 2.21 ERA, and 1.03 walks plus hits per inning pitched.
