O’Donnell was a high school football player at Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School, Kingston Ontario. According to the Canadian Football League’s Amateur Scouting Bureau, O’Donnell was ranked 11th for eligible players in the 2011 CFL Draft and 6th by CIS players. O’Donnell was named to the East-West Shrine Game on December 17, 2010.
O’Donnell’s rights were traded by the Roughriders to Edmonton Eskimos on September 5, 2012. On September 17, he was signed by the Eskimos. He was a member of the Eskimos between 2012 and 2014.
O’Donnell was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals again on February 2, 2015. He was waived by the Bengals on September 5, 2015, after failing to make the 53-man final roster.
O’Donnell was chosen in the second round and 15th overall by the Saskatchewan Roughriders. O’Donnell was the fourth offensive lineman taken in the draft, but was the highest CIS offensive lineman selected.
O’Donnell, who was signed with the Roughriders on May 31, 2011, was reported to have delayed his signing due to the fact that the NBA’s Boston Celtics had put him through a June workout. O’Donnell had not played basketball since highschool. This was considered unusual.
