Ghaffari has the distinction of being the most skilled Greco-Roman athlete in U.S.A. history with three American records.

in 2002 Ghaffari took on Tokyo Dome in front of 28,000 people in an event in mixed martial arts at UFOthe Universal Fighting-Arts Organization against judo Olympic Silver Medalist Naoya Ogawa. Ghaffari did manage to take Ogawa down and smack his opponent with a quick attack that was a pound and ground, but when he came returned to standing. Ogawa struck him with a blow that changed Matt’s left eye’s contact lens and forced him out of the fight.

After his time with MMA, Ghaffari stated to join the Japanese promotional Pro Wrestling ZERO-ONE, where Ghaffari won the NWA Intercontinental Tag Team Championship together with Tom Howard on December 15 2002, after defeating Shinya Hashimoto and his old rival Naoya Ogawa. They held the title up to April 29th, 2003 which was the day they lost to Hashimoto as well as Ogawa.
