Matthew Phillip Dermody (born July 4 90th, 1990) is an American professional baseball player of the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. He been a part of Major League Baseball (MLB) with The Toronto Blue Jays.
On September 1st September 1, 2016, Dermody was called up by the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays made him MLB debut on 3 September in a game against Tampa Bay Rays. As a relief pitcher for Joe Biagini, he pitched the second third of an inning. He was faced with four batters. handed two hits but did not allow any earned runs and he got two outs, while striking out one. Dermody ended up making five appearances for Toronto and failed to end a game during the last two innings, en route to an 12.00 ERA. After the 2016 seasonended, Dermody was assigned to the Blue Jays assigned Dermody to the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League. On the 31st of October, Dermody was named an AFL All- Star. He was a part of the AFL All-Star game with Mesa as a pitcher, and posted an 5.40 ERA with eight strikeouts.
On April 16, 2017, Dermody was recalled by the Blue Jays from the Buffalo Bisons. He was optioned back to Buffalo on April 17, recalled again on April 28, and sent back down on April 30. On March 21, 2018, Dermody was designated for assignment. He was outrighted to Triple-A Buffalo on March 24. Dermody underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2018. He was assigned to Triple-A Buffalo and put on the Injured list to start the 2019 season. He became a free agent following the 2019 season.
On March 9, 2020, Dermody signed with the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
Dermody was a student at Norwalk High School in his hometown of Norwalk, Iowa. In his senior year the pitcher posted an overall record of 10-3 wins-loss, 1.26 earned run average (ERA) with 164 strikes. He also had the distinction of having the first six-inning 18 strikeout-perfect performance of Iowa State history. Additionally, Dermody hit .434 with 51 runs batted in (RBI). His pitching skills in 2009 brought him home with the Bob Feller Pitching Award. Dermody was chosen for Pittsburgh Pirates in the 26th round of 2009. Pittsburgh Pirates in the 26th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball draft, however, he did not sign, and instead enrolled at his home University of Iowa. The Hawkeyes in 2010, Dermody made ten appearances with seven of them being starts, and threw his 7.93 ERA. In the following season, he pitched 14 starts and was 4-4 with an 4.15 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 84/3 innings pitched. In the years 2010 and 2011, He played in collegiate summer baseball for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod Baseball League. They Colorado Rockies drafted Dermody in the 29th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft, however, he didn’t sign.

As of 2012 Dermody was awarded the Iowa’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award in 2012, and pitched to a record of 1-7, 4.50 ERA, and 60 strikeouts in 76 hours. He was picked for the third time and this time, by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 23rd round of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft. Dermody stated his intention to join the Diamondbacks and then travelled to Arizona to undergo a physical exam. The Diamondbacks team determined that he had a forty percent tear in the right ulnar collateral ligament and, fearing that the injury would necessitate Tommy John surgery, declined to sign him up for an agreement. Dermody later returned to Hawkeyes during his senior year with 14 appearances in the 2013 season. He was the most successful year of his career at the college level, putting up 7-2 wins-loss records, 3.64 ERA, and 68 strikeouts over 94 innings.
The Toronto Blue Jays selected Dermody in the 28th round of 2013’s Major League Baseball draft, and he was signed on the 14th of June. The team he was with were the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Blue Jays in which he played one relief appearance that was scoreless prior to being promoted to the short season-a Vancouver Canadians of the Northwest League. In 43/3 of his innings during that season, Dermody pitched to 5-1 records, 1.66 ERA, and 51 strikeouts. As of 2014, Dermody moved to Class A Lansing Lugnuts, where he pitched to a 4-6 mark, 4.69 ERA, and 65 strikeouts in a career high 96 innings. Dermody received a call-up to the Advanced-A Dunedin Blue Jays for the 2015 season. In 77 innings during the season, he recorded a 4-1 record having the 4.21 ERA and 62 strikeouts.
Dermody remained in Dunedin to open the 2016 season, and made 16 relief appearances with a 1.96 ERA before being promoted to the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats. He excelled at the Double-A level, making another 16 relief appearances and posting a 0.92 ERA, which led to his promotion to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.
