Mathias Seger (born December 17 1977) is a Swiss professional defenceman in ice hockey who played for the SC Rapperswil Jona Lakers as well as the ZSC Lions of the National League (NL). Seger started his career in professional hockey at SC Rapperswil-Jona in 1996. He played for three seasons with Rapperswil-Jona until he joined the Lions in 1999. As part of the Swiss national men’s team, he was awarded a silver medal at the 2013 World Championships. Seger also took home his first Champions League as well as six National League titles, all as part of the ZSC Lions. Seger will be admitted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2020.
On February 28, 2017 Seger was able to sign an extension of one year to his contract with the Lions with a reported value in the region of CHF 1.5 millions.
On February 4, 2020, he was announced as an inductee into the player category of the IIHF Hall of Fame.
In the summer of 2017, Seger was stripped of Zurich captaincy for reasons that were not disclosed. Patrick Geering became the new captain of the team. After securing six times the Swiss championship as a member of ZSC Lions in 2018, ZSC Lions in 2018, He made the announcement of the close of his career. Seger was chosen to be part of the Switzerland national men’s Ice Hockey team during the 2010 Winter Olympics.
