Masami Hirosaka (Guang Ban Zheng Mei , Hirosaka Masami, born on 26 February 1970 Kyoto, Japan) is a Japanese radio controlled car driver that is thought to be the most successful, winning 14 IFMAR World Championships in 1/12 scale electric 1/10 scale, 1/10 scale Pan 1/10 scale 2WD offroad in addition to 1/10 scale 4WD all powered by electric. Hirosaka’s friends have called his nickname “Master Masami”. He was regarded as one of the most highly paid racers in RC racing until he resigned from racing. The last IFMAR race took place in world championship in 2008 in Thailand. The day of his retirement ceremony was May 3rd 2009.
In 1987, at the world championship race for off-road 4WD racing at Romsey, England, Hirosaka came in as a privateer sporting the Schumacher CAT, but was supplied with the power source that came from HPI Japan. He showed promise in the practice sessions and was brought to the spotlight from Phil Booth, Schumacher’s works driver, who recommended to Cecil Schumacher, who provided the longer wheelbase version known as the CAT XL, then unavailable in Japan and raced by the major majority of racing. While it was not stock with most part of running equipment incorporated from his previous CAT, Hirosaka managed to win the race. Following his win the Japanese driver was presented with a number of proposals from sponsors but decided to go with Yokomo.
Throughout his career, Masami has always raced in the green over white with pink flames (similar style to those found typically in hot rods), but since the 1990s, the pink colour has become less dominant part of the colour as he added the orange and red to form part of his current colour scheme.
In 1998, he is one of two drivers to achieve an electric car clean sweep at the JMRCA All-Japan Championship, the only driver to achieve this more than once (also 1987, 1989 and 1992) and the only one to achieve five out of five wins in eligible classes, a feat no longer possible since 2005 when the 1:10 Racing class was discontinued.
In his time, Masami preferred to race using stick transmitters because when he first started race, Japanese branded wheel transmitters were not available. He tried using wheels, but believed sticks provided better control of the car. In the years prior to 1987 the year 1987, he was using a Futaba transmitter, but after that he changed onto KO Propo which he used throughout his career. In the arrangement with Yokomo the car was powered using Reedy motors, which is a part that is part of Associated Electrics.
