The release in the Koki Mitani adaptation film of Radio no Jikan in 1997, Nishimura won acclaim for his performance as an engineer in the radio industry, a role in which he was awarded the Best Supporting Actor Award from the Japanese Academy Awards as well as the Blue Ribbon Award.

The success in The Tokyo Sunshine Boys brought Nishimura roles in TV dramas including a role in Furikaereba Yatsuga Iru as well as Shintaro Imaizumi, a flamboyant character on Koki Mitani’s Furuhata Ninzaburo.

The year 1983 was when Nishimura, Mitani and others, including the performers Zen Kajiwara and Kazuyuki Aijima created The Tokyo Sunshine Boys, a comedy group that grew in popularity throughout the next 10 years. They wrote the well-known comedy 12 Gentle Japanese, a version of Reginald’s 12 Angry Men. The time the play 12 Gentle Japanese was adapted to film, Nishimura did not form part of the casting.

The Tokyo Sunshine Boys disbanded in 1998, but most of its actors, including Nishimura, continued to work in television.
