She was employed from that point until 1985. She was then appointed the Chairman/Chief Executive at Intis Investment Company.

In her term as President during her term, during her term, the Federal Government approved the National Gender Policy in pursuit of the equality of gender and children’s well-being across the country. In January 2007, her ministry released “National Guidelines and Standards of Practice for Orphans and Vulnerable Children”. In May 2007, in reference to the action plan that was outlined in the report, Ciroma declared that “Without taking determined steps to address the specific needs of children, there will be no chance of meeting the Millennium Development Goals”.

She is the wife of Mallam Adamu Ciroma, a late Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and Minister of Finance who was the chairman of the Obasanjo 2003 re- election organization.

Hajia Maryam I. Ciroma (born 11 September 1954) was appointed Nigerian minister of Women Affairs in July 2005 by President Olusegun Obasanjo. She was succeeded by Saudatu Bungudu as the president Umaru Yar’Adua swore in his cabinet in July 2007.

In 2003, Ciroma attempted to be her People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Borno South Senatorial District. She was named the Minister of State in charge of women Affairs on July 5, 2005 succeeding Rita Akpan. She was appointed to this post after the major reshuffle in January 2007. In August 2005, she began an extensive campaign to educate each of the states that comprise the Nigerian Federation concerning issues related to the rights of children and gender discrimination. In the run-up to the 2007 elections she urged a portion of positions in the elections to be reserved for women, highlighting the gender gap in Nigerian political life.

After leaving office, Ciroma became National Woman Leader of the PDP. Hajia Maryam Inna Ciroma also served as Managing Director: National Inland Waterways Authority, Lokoja, Kogi State Nigeria. She turned around Water Transportation in Nigeria and embarked on massive enlightenment programs about safety on Nigerian Waterways. In December 2014 she was recognized by the ECOWAS Students body West African Students Union Parliament-WASUP with the WASUP Kwame Nkrumah Honor (www.wasuonline.org). The Nigerian Coordinator for WASUP Comr. Daniel Emeka Nwachukwu, described her as “a great women, leader and mentor and example of selfless service for both women and children rights, with positive effects on the youths” for her contributions to Nation Building.
