Her book 2, The Center of Winter released in 2005, received rave reviews. her autobiography, Madness The Bipolar Experience came out in 2008. It received immediate reviews and reached on the New York Times Bestseller list. Sane Addiction, Mental Illness along with the twelve Steps was released in 2010. Waiting: A Non-believer’s Higher Power was released in the year 2011. Both were finalist to be finalists for the Books for Better Life Award. In the last several years , she has been considered for nominations to the Pushcart Prize in both non-fiction and poetry.
Her third book, published in April 2008, a memoir titled Madness: A Bipolar Life, chronicles the years following Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia when she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Her fourth book, published in 2010, is the recovery handbook Sane: Mental Illness, Addiction, and the Twelve Steps written as a guide to working the Twelve Steps for people who suffer from both addiction and mental illness.
She has been clean for more than 17 year (since in the spring of 2001 as per Madness). She was awarded an important award which was an award called the ASCAP Award for music journalism for her story of the jazz legend Oscar Peterson (published January 2005). She was also double Fellow of Yale. She is still publishing occasional pieces of journalism and poetry and short fiction.

Marya Hornbacher was born in Walnut Creek, California and was raised at Edina, Minnesota. Hornbacher is the sole child from Jay Hornbacher and Judy Hornbacher, professional theatre directors and actors. When she was 14 years old, Hornbacher was old she was accepted to the highly regarded arts school for boarding Interlochen. Then, she was accepted into the University of Minnesota and started writing for the school’s student newspaper The Minnesota Daily. The fall of 1992 she enrolled in college with American University in Washington, D.C. She later earned her degree in philosophy as well as poetry at The New College of California.
Hornbacher was married to Julian Daniel Beard in 1996 however they split after the successful release of Wasted. The wedding, and eventually divorce, is described in Madness where she attributes her marriage’s failure to her addiction issues with drugs and alcohol, but mostly due to her bipolar disorder, which she had not managed properly. Hornbacher later got married to Jeff Miller.
Her second book is the critically praised 2005 novel, The Center of Winter, which follows a family in the aftermath of a suicide.
