Heebner is born the 19th of April 1951, in Los Angeles, California to Claire Lucille Menei and Walter Schussler Heebner. His father, Walter, was a professional musician as well as a composer and songwriter who later became an director in RCA Records and Capitol Records. Mary Heebner attended Providence High School and was a place in which Corita Kent as well as Daniel Berrigan made occasional contact.

Heebner has a deep interest in antiquity. In 1995, she created and illustrated her monograph Old Marks, New Marks and an essay of Carolyn Radlo, linking her method to the ancient art of mark-making. In 1997, she was contacted to join her French Minister of Culture to go into her favorite cave, the Lascaux cave that had shut down to visitors since. This sparked a series paintings and a book by the artist, Scratching the Surface: A visit to Lascaux and Rouffignac that prompted an invitation to return to Lascaux. A trip the cities of Angkor and Ayutthaya was the catalyst for large-scale installations (“Bodhisattvas in Ayutthaya” as well as “Ancient Presences” and three artist books (Full Lotus, Bayon: Sketches from Bayon Temple, Angkor Thom Silent Faces/Angkor) and the series Geography of A Face: Khmer. A series of trips to Patagonia in Chile resulted in a series of paintings as well as the subsequent artist book , Unearthed.

Heebner’s interest in Classical sculpture influenced a series of large paintings including the Venus Paintings, exhibited in 2013, of which Dr. Bruce Robertson has written, “Heebner had miraculously rescued these sculptures from the museums she has seen them in and returned them to the world they came from, a world of change, accident, thick encrustations and vaporous atmosphere.”

She was a student at the University of Santa Barbara in California’s College of Creative Studies and received the degree of B.A. in 1973. In 1973, she also received her M.F.A. at UC Santa Barbara in 1977.
