The month of June, 2008 was the time that Dunne has been elected as the chairman of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) which is an intergovernmental organization headquartered at Brussels, Belgium. Dunne continued in this position throughout his tenure as a Customs official with New Zealand Customs. In March of 2011, Dunne became New Zealand High Commissioner to Australia which that he held until the end of October. Dunne was appointed the director of operations for the Ministry for Primary Industries beginning 18 November 2013. He resigned from the MPI post in the year 2018.
Dunne began his military career as a member of his unit, the Territorial Force of the New Zealand Army in the year 1971. He was assigned onto the Regular Force in October 1977 with an rank of Lieutenant within the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment. He was assigned as a member of 1 Ranger Squadron, New Zealand Special Air Service, Papakura and was appointed as an officer in charge of the troops. He was captain and posted overseas as part of his New Zealand Army Truce Monitoring contingent within South Rhodesia. On July 29, 1989 Dunne became the commandant for Waiouru’s Officer Cadet School in Waiouru and was promoted into lieutenant colonel. In September 1999, he was posted to the New Zealand Force East Timor as the top national officer. The rank was upgraded to brigadier in the month of October 1999 and was the commander of Dili Command, an operational structure of the International Force East Timor (INTERFET). In this capacity as a commander in East Timor, Dunne commanded New Zealand Forces and international troops in New Zealand’s biggest mission since World War II. Dunne was elevated to the grade of Major General on April 2 2001, prior to taking the post of the Commander Joint Forces New Zealand (COMJFNZ) the post was held until 2004.

Martyn John Dunne CNZM QSO (born 16 January 1950) is a retired New Zealand Army officer, diplomat, and a senior public service. He is the executive director for the Ministry for Primary Industries. From 2011 until 2013 , he was the New Zealand High Commissioner to Australia located in Canberra. He served as Comptroller of Customs and the Chief executive for the New Zealand Customs Service (2004-2011) after a time as a an officer with the New Zealand Army from 1970 to 2004 as the Commander of Joint Forces New Zealand with the rank of major general. The month of September, 1999 was the time that Dunne headed the New Zealand Force East Timor during the largest New Zealand military deployment following World War II, and as the Senior National Officer with an rank equivalent to brigadier headed his brigadier’s unit, the Dili Command, an operational organization in the International Force East Timor, from 2000.
Dunne graduated of his school, the Australian College of Defence and Strategic Studies as well as the Australian Command and Staff College. He holds earned a Master of Arts of strategic studies at La Trobe University, Melbourne. He was appointed an Companion to the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2000, following his time during the conflict in East Timor.
Dunne was made a Companion of the Queen Service Order (QSO) in the 2019 New Year Honours List.
