Marty Bax is one of the most popular and richest Art Historian who was born on November 10, 1956 in Montreal, Canada. Bax her research-based philosophy of art is multidisciplinary which combines art history and research with (socioeconomic) sociology, history and philosophy, the genealogy and the history of religion. She is an unofficial (co-)curator of and scholarly advisor to a variety of international institutions regarding modern art , beginning in 1850. She has written numerous essays and books as well as essays about Dutch architects for Oxford Art Online. She was the editor of the art department’s university journal, the historical Kunstlicht and the creator of its foundation, as well as editor-in-chief of the scholarly journal Jong Holland. She is an art critic with Het Financieele Dagblad she has published more than 500 articles on architecture, art design, design, institution and private collection, and the market for art. She also organized gatherings, e.g. regarding Nazi plunder and the cultural heritage.
Marty (Martine Theodora) Bax (born 1956) is an art historian from Canada and the Netherlands. She is also an art critic of the modern era. Her research interests include those by Piet Mondrian (Dutch: Piet Mondriaan) and the connection to art with Western Esotericism particularly Modern Theosophy and Anthroposophy.
In 1991 she published Bauhaus Lecture Notes 1930-1933, in which she describes the continuing influence of Western Esotericism on the theory and practice of the Bauhaus, right until its closing in 1933.
The exhibition Okkultismus und Avantgarde (1995), of which Bax was member of the scholarly board and organizer of the Dutch section, was the first exhibition to focus exclusively on the influence of Western Esotericism on European art, thus opening a new field of art historical research.
Bax was born on the 10th of November 1956, in Montreal (Quebec, Canada). Her parents were journalists at both newspaper Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant and Algemeen Dagblad in Rotterdam Netherlands). While in Canada the family of her dad Jack was a reporter for radio with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. After her move to the Netherlands the chief of Public Relations at the city of Rotterdam as well as Port of Rotterdam. The first person in the Netherlands to establish an information center for the public residents, where city development was discussed openly. In the 1960s, he was among the first to envision local television and radio as channels for public information. Bax is the daughter of civil rights activist and human rights advocate Robert van Voren as well as of Jacky Bax the Programme Manager and Deputy Director of NRPO SIA / Taskforce for Applied Research previously known as Programmer Director Innovation Universities at Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.

Bax began her study of painting in the form of Western Esotericism after the exhibition The Spiritual in Art: Abstract Paintings from 1890 to 1985 (1986-1987) in which Bax was curator assistant of The Gemeentemuseum Den Haag located in The Hague.
Piet Mondrian. The Amsterdam period from 1892 to 1212 (1994) is the first comprehensive study of the extensive artistic and social network created by Piet Mondrian, based upon research into genealogy and primary archives. In 1996, she was named as editor for Volume 1 of The Catalogue Raisonne of Mondrian’s work. The monograph Mondrian Complete received the Choice Outstanding Academic Title Award in 2002. Since then she has published and regularly gives talks on various aspects of Mondrian’s life as well as art. She also serves as an expert in the authentication of Mondrian’s work. In 2014, she launched the world’s first 3D online multi-user Mondrian Museum, in conjunction along with ActiveWorlds Europe and DX Media.
Bax studied art history at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. In 1987 she graduated on a thesis on the profound but still scholarly unrecognized influence of Japanese calligraphy on the work of the American Abstract Expressionist Franz Kline. In 2004 she received her PhD on the influence of Modern Theosophy on Dutch art between 1880 and 1920.

In 2010 she became interested in the life of Grete Trakl, musical prodigy and sister of the Austrian poet Georg Trakl, because of her notes on lectures by Rudolf Steiner. Research resulted in the first comprehensive biography of Grete Trakl, published in 2014. This book contains several chapters on her brother’s position within the tradition of Western Esotericism.
