Martina Hellmann is one of the most popular and richest Athletics Competitor who was born on December 12, 1960 in Leipzig, Saxony, Germany. Martina Helga Hellmann (nee Opitz born 12 December, 1960) is a retired German track and field athlete who was a representative of East Germany. Her name was among the Olympic record holder in the throw of discus in the 1988 Summer Olympics. She also took home the World Championship in that event in 1983 and later in 1987.
Following in 1992’s Summer Olympics in which she was eliminated in the qualifying and then resigned. She was later the head of a sports section within the company AOK and was a manager of a cabaret in Leipzig.
On the 6th of September, 1988, she was able to throw the discus 78.14 meters, more than any female athlete had throw it before or since. But, the throw was at an unofficial event in Kienbaum in the East German training camp at Kienbaum that was set up to determine the final GDR location to participate in the Olympic games in Seoul and therefore was not eligible to be considered an official world record. In this event, she throw the following distances, two of which were higher than the record set at the time, and two which were ever surpassed with only one thrower female. 76.92m — 78.14m 70.52m – 78.14m 70.52m – 76.56m — 75.66m and 74.04m (the record for women’s throws that was established in July 1988, is 76.80 meters). Ilke Wyludda recorded the world record for lifetime distances of 75.36 m, but she had to leave home. The five throws that Hellmann threw at the competition were higher than her own personal record of 72.92 meters, which she threw on August 27, 1987, in Potsdam and which places as ninth on the list of the top 100 world record holders and 6th in the world’s top German discus throwers, following Gabriele Reinsch Ilke Wyludda and Diana Gansky-Sachse Irina Meszynski, and Gisela Beyer.

Born to Leipzig, Saxony, Hellmann was just 16 when she started participating in the competition. In 1977, she took the participants an oath at the beginning of the East German gymnastics and sport festival. In the summer of 1977, she set the record in the world for the 16-year-old class by throwing 55.00 meters. Her professional career was plagued by injuries and illness until 1983, when she was the unexpected world champion. She was not able to participate in her 1984 Summer Olympic games because of her country’s boycott.
