Martin John Salter (born 19 April 1954) is Martin John Salter (born 19 April 1954) is a British Labour Party politician who was the MP of Reading West from 1997 until 2010. Reading West from 1997 to the year 2010.
Salter was chosen as the candidate of his party for the seat of Reading West for the 1997 general election. He quit the council in 1996 to focus on his campaign. The incumbent Conservative Member Tony Durant had a majority of over 10,000 at the general election in 1992, however, his decision to step down put the seat than a possibility. In the final result, Salter gained the seat with a vote of approximately 3000 against the the former member Nicholas Bennett.
Salter was an active constituency MP, with frequent appearances in the local media and at local meetings. He has a high local profile and in the 2001 election secured the second highest swing to Labour in the country. After his re-election in 2005, Salter was one of only six Labour MPs with a majority still higher than the 1997 landslide.
On 30 November 2005, Salter resigned as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Schools Minister Jacqui Smith over school reform proposals and co-authored the Alternative Education White Paper with a group of centre-left MPs including John Denham, Angela Eagle, Joan Ruddock and Alan Whitehead. In June 2007, he was appointed as vice-chair (Environment) of the Labour Party.
After joining to the Labour Party when he was 17 years old, Salter became secretary of the local residents’ group in 1980. It was a post that he held until 1984. The council, at the time under Conservative control had cut the budget for holiday playscheme and Salter tried to stop the cuts, the results of which he credits as the primary reason behind his decision to run for council. Salter won the election in Park Ward in the month of May 1984. Two years after, Labour gained control of the council. Salter was appointed chairman of the leisure and recreation committee and one year later he became the Deputy Leader of Council In this role, Salter claims he was instrumental in the development of the town’s central area and led Labour towards unprecedented election victory’. Salter was first an MP candidate in the general election of 1987 of Reading East. He claimed that some of his rivals were carpetbaggers Salter ran with the slogan of “Martin Salter lives here’ and was just a few points behind candidate SDP (Alliance) campaigner .

Beginning in 1975 Salter was employed in transport and construction industries. He held a variety of positions including labourer or a freight handler. In the years that followed he was a active member of the General and Transport Workers’ Union as well as the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians and worked as shop steward, charged with the negotiation of wages and conditions for workers’. Salter moved to Reading in the year 1980 and in 1982 , he changed his work focus when he was employed to work for Reading Borough Council for the purpose of helping coordinate programs for children that were based on community. This was then he moved in 1984 to be the coordinator of the Reading Centre that caters to the Jobless. In 1987, he resigned from the position, Salter would thereafter work for Co-op Home Services until 1996 beginning as the Development officer, and later the regional manager.

In parliament, Salter served on the Select committee on Northern Ireland through the period of the Good Friday Agreement. He was also a member of the Modernisation Select Committee between 2001 and 2005, and in 2006 entered the Home Affairs Select Committee. Salter was the Chair of the South East Group of PLP between 1999 and 2003, was the Deputy Convenor of Labour’s Parliamentary Campaign Team between 2003 and 2005, and was twice elected by fellow MPs as a member of Labour’s Parliamentary Committee between 2005 and 2008.
