Martin L. Kersten is one of the most popular and richest Computer Scientist who was born on October 25, 1953 in Amsterdam, Kingdom of the Netherlands. Martin L. Kersten (born on the 25th of October, 1953) is an expert in computer science with a particular attention to databases and query optimization, as well as their application in the field of scientific databases. He is the designer of the MonetDB system, an open source column store that is used in data warehouses and Online analytical processing (OLAP) and geographic information systems (GIS). He was (co-) co-founder of several successful spin-offs from the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI).
In April 1992, he was appointed the director for the department of Information Systems. He also initiated his ESPRIT-III Pythagoras project aimed at testing the performance of modern databases. He was an associate professor of the Vrije Universiteit, where he taught advanced classes in databases until the middle of 1994. In 1992, he was appointed an associate faculty member of the University of Amsterdam and a full professor of multimedia databases on January of 1994.
MonetDB is a high-performance column-store relational database management system with automatic index management, flexible optimizer infrastructure, and programmable backend functionality. MonetDB (initially only called Monet) was first created by 2002 doctoral student Peter Boncz and professor Martin Kersten as part of the 1990s MAGNUM research project at University of Amsterdam. The first version under an open-source software license (a modified version of the Mozilla Public License) was released on September 30, 2004.
Kersten is an active reviewer for European Strategic Program on Research in Information Technology (ESPRIT) projects and scientific publications. Moreover, he is a trustee of the VLDB Endowment board, which aims to promote and exchange scholarly work in databases and related fields worldwide. Since 2007 Kersten is also editorial board member of “PVLDB” and he served on the editorial board of ACM Transactions on Database Systems journal in 2010.
Data mining projects during the 1990s demanded greater analysis-oriented database capabilities. This led to a CWI spin-off named Data Distilleries, which used earlier MonetDB implementations within the analytical software. Data Distilleries eventually became a part to SPSS in 2003. It was then purchased in 2009 by IBM during 2009.
